Nigeria’s mobile telecom market just recorded a shift that no operator or analyst had ever seen before in the country’s history. The latest subscriber data from the Nigerian Communications Commission points to a number that alters the competitive picture across the entire sector.

For several years, MTN Nigeria has led the subscriber race by a wide margin over Airtel, Globacom, and T2 Mobile. But the July 2026 numbers suggest the gap between MTN and the rest of the market is no longer just a comfortable lead.

It looks more like structural dominance, and every other operator now faces a fundamentally different competitive challenge.

MTN Nigeria’s subscriber count crosses a threshold no operator had reached

MTN Nigeria ended July 2026 with 100.86 million active subscribers, up from 98.64 million the previous month, the Nigerian Communications Commission reported.

The addition of 2.22 million users in a single month marked the company’s strongest monthly growth so far in 2026. It was also the largest single-month subscriber increase since November 2024, signaling that MTN’s growth momentum is accelerating rather than plateauing. No Nigerian telecom operator had previously reached the 100-million active-subscriber mark, even before the nationwide NIN-SIM linkage enforcement exercise began.

The milestone gives MTN control of 51.76% of Nigeria’s total mobile subscriber base, with more than one in two mobile users now sitting on its network.

How MTN Nigeria built a 6.6 million subscriber lead in seven months

MTN entered 2026 with approximately 94.2 million subscribers and added more than 6.6 million lines by the end of July. That figure translates to an average of roughly 31,000 new subscribers joining the network every single day during the period, TechCabal reported.

The growth appears driven by more than routine new customer sign-ups, with several structural factors working in MTN’s favor simultaneously. Odafi pointed to new acquisitions, reactivation of previously restricted lines, subscribers migrating from competing networks, and expanded coverage into new areas. MTN Nigeria’s operation now accounts for nearly one-third of MTN Group’s 317.7 million global subscriber base as of June 2026.

Where Airtel, Globacom, and T2 Mobile stand against MTN Nigeria

Airtel Nigeria, the second-largest operator, ended July with 66.76 million subscribers after adding more than 600,000 users during the month. Globacom closed the month at 23.63 million subscribers but was the only major operator to record a net loss of 54,000 users, Technext24 reported. T2 Mobile, formerly 9mobile, ended at 3.61 million subscribers, with July marking the first time in four months the operator recorded growth.

MTN Nigeria’s H1 2026 earnings reflect the commercial weight behind subscriber growth

The subscriber surge is already visible in MTN Nigeria’s financial results for the first half of 2026 across every major metric. Service revenue rose 25.9% to ₦2.99 trillion, and profit after tax increased 70.6%, the company’s H1 2026 earnings release showed.

Data revenue climbed 38.4% during the same period, supported by a 9.3% increase in active data users that reached 55.7 million. Capital expenditure, excluding lease additions, reached ₦620.5 billion ($449.6 million), directed toward spectrum acquisition, fiber backhaul, and broader network infrastructure.

CEO Karl Toriola described the performance as reflecting sustained commercial momentum, improved profitability, and robust cash generation, the earnings release confirmed. Telecoms analyst Adebayo Muriithi noted that the 38.4% jump in data revenue shows subscribers are consuming substantially more digital services, Blueprint reported.

What the NCC’s July 2026 subscriber data signals for Nigeria’s telecom market

The NCC’s July 2026 figures confirm MTN Nigeria has moved past a scale threshold that no other Nigerian operator has reached or appears close to reaching. Odafi, the telecom industry expert, noted that the subscriber base represents nearly a third of MTN Group’s entire global footprint, underscoring how central Nigeria is to the parent company’s strategy.

That concentration of market power in a single operator will shape pricing dynamics, infrastructure spending, and competitive positioning across the sector. For anyone tracking how mobile connectivity, data consumption, and fintech access are evolving in Nigeria, these subscriber figures carry implications that extend well beyond a single month of growth.
