You log into your bank’s app, upload a document, or try to file a return, and the system rejects your old ten-digit TIN without explanation. That frustration hit millions of Nigerians after the Nigeria Tax Administration Act took effect on January 1, 2026.

The entire tax identification infrastructure shifted from the Joint Tax Board to the newly created Nigeria Revenue Service, and the old validation API was officially replaced. If you earn income from any trade, profession, or economic activity, you now need a verified 13-digit Tax ID linked to your NIN or CAC registration number.

The process costs nothing and takes less than five minutes on a phone for most people with active NIN records. For businesses, the CAC registration number now serves as the corporate Tax ID under the same framework.

How the NRS portal replaced the old JTB validation system

Four tax reform bills signed by President Bola Tinubu on June 26, 2025, dismantled the previous registration architecture and created a unified digital system. The Nigeria Revenue Service (Establishment) Act, the Nigeria Tax Act, the Nigeria Tax Administration Act, and the Joint Revenue Board (Establishment) Act all took effect on January 1, 2026, according to PwC Nigeria.

The Federal Inland Revenue Service transitioned into the Nigeria Revenue Service, which now serves as the sole collector of all federally chargeable taxes, while the old Joint Tax Board was replaced by the Joint Revenue Board.

Under this structure, the ten-digit TIN is being phased out in favor of a 13-digit Tax ID that encodes the issuance year, the registry source, and a check digit. For individuals, the NIN automatically serves as the Tax ID, and for companies, the CAC registration number fills the same role.

Who must register for a TIN under the NTAA 2025?

The NTAA defines a taxable person as anyone who earns income from trade, business, or other economic activities, and that definition reaches further than most people expect. Taiwo Oyedele, now the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, explained this distinction in late 2025, BusinessDay reported.

Entities required to hold a valid Tax ID

  • Salaried employees, self-employed individuals, sole proprietors, freelancers, and independent contractors earning income from any economic activity
  • Partnerships, limited liability companies, incorporated trustees, NGOs, and cooperatives registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission
  • Foreign companies providing goods, services, or digital products to Nigerian residents with significant economic presence

Oyedele clarified that individuals without income, including students and dependents, are not required to obtain a Tax ID under Section 4 of the Act. He described the reform as a harmonization of existing requirements rather than an entirely new policy.

Step-by-step TIN registration through the NRS Tax ID portal

The entire TIN registration online process runs through one URL and requires no paperwork, no office visit, and no fee. Multiple NRS-affiliated registration guides, including TaxNGR, have confirmed that anyone demanding payment for TIN retrieval is running a scam.

For individuals using NIN

  • Visit taxid.nrs.gov.ng and select the “Individual” tab on the portal homepage to begin the verification process.
  • Enter your 11-digit NIN exactly as it appears on your NIMC slip, along with your date of birth in the required format.
  • The portal retrieves your 13-digit Tax ID instantly if your NIN record is active and your biometric enrollment with NIMC is complete.
  • Screenshot the result page or download the confirmation, since old physical TIN certificates no longer carry legal validity from 2026.

For businesses using CAC registration number

  • Visit taxid.nrs.gov.ng and select “Non-Individual,” then choose between Business Name, Company, or Incorporated Trustee as the entity type.
  • Enter your CAC registration number using only digits, excluding the RC or BN prefix letters, and submit the query.

What to do when your old TIN fails validation on the NRS portal

The most common reason for a failed lookup is a name mismatch between the information stored in the NIMC database and the records originally filed with the old JTB system. A discrepancy as small as an added middle initial will cause the portal to return a blank result.

To resolve this, check your NIN slip for the exact name spelling and retry with that precise format on the portal. If the problem persists, visit the nearest NRS office with your NIN slip, a valid government-issued ID, and your old TIN certificate, TaxNGR recommended in a guide published in March 2026. NRS staff can perform a manual data sync to link your legacy record to the new 13-digit Tax ID, the guide noted.

The verification system on the NRS portal also allows searches by old TIN number or by CAC registration number, giving users multiple pathways to recover their records.

Penalties for not registering and what the NTAA enforces

The consequences of operating without a valid Tax ID extend beyond administrative inconvenience into direct financial penalties. Under the NTAA, the penalty for failing to register is ₦50,000 for the first month and ₦25,000 for each subsequent month of non-compliance, Manifield Solicitors noted in a legal analysis of the Act.

NTAA penalties and restrictions at a glance

  • First-month non-registration penalty: ₦50,000; each additional month: ₦25,000, with no stated cap on cumulative charges under the Act
  • Bank account restrictions: financial institutions must request a Tax ID from all taxable account holders before processing certain transactions
  • Failure to file annual returns: ₦100,000 for the first month and ₦50,000 for each additional month, according to The Cable
  • False declarations: ₦1,000,000 administrative penalty, imprisonment not exceeding three years, or both, under Section 124 of the NTAA

NRS Executive Chairman Dr. Zacch Adedeji has set the agency’s 2026 revenue target at ₦40.7 trillion, Daily Trust reported. The automation of TIN verification and the linkage to NIN and CAC records are central pillars of that revenue strategy.

President Tinubu reinforced this direction at the commissioning of the new NRS headquarters in Abuja in April 2026, stating that the goal is to widen the tax net without overburdening the hardworking citizens of the country, BusinessDay reported.
